Officially half-way to our goal of 5000 volunteers, the 2023 Canada Games Host Society was happy to catch up with Dr.Carla DiGiorgio, our 2,500th volunteer.
Having volunteered at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in PEI, DiGiorgio is excited to once again share our Island with Canadian athletes from far and wide
“I see people's dreams come true through hard work and dedication,” she said. “The culmination of years of preparation can be very exciting for all because their attitude is positive and they are kind and fair with each other.”
A UPEI professor and talented artist, DiGiorgio’s work has allowed her to meet people from all walks of life. This experience, she hopes, will allow the Cornwall native to better connect with Canadians visiting our Island for the first time.
“I want them to feel welcome and at home, and I want to learn more about their sport,” DiGiorgio said. “Diversity to me means accepting, welcoming and appreciating the differences and similarities among cultures, languages and customs in a community.”
A place so Canadian even the soil is red, Prince Edward Island is known across the world for its hospitality. It is this strong sense of warmth and community that DiGiorgio believes makes PEI the perfect place to unite the nation through the power of sport.
“We have new Canadians, we have people from the Ukraine starting a new life, we have a history of Lebanese and Asian people who have enriched our culture. We have Francophone and Anglophone people throughout PEI,” she said.
“I have a particular appreciation for Indigenous cultures on PEI as well. It only improves our Island to be open and learn from each other.”
When all is said and done, DiGiorgio hopes everyone involved with the Games - from athletes, coaches and volunteers to the friends, family and fans in the stands - will be able to look back at 2023 Canada Games with only the fondest of memories.
From the athletes, coaches and volunteers to the friends and family in the stands, DiGiorgio is confident the 2023 Canada Winter Games will represent a proud moment for both PEI and every Canadian who helped bring the Games to life.
“They will see their hard work pay off in the excitement of young people while also having the opportunity to meet and share their time together during this wonderful experience.”
